Why Favors Given You May be Booby-Trapped

REAL SUCCESS BUILDER. If someone gives you favors, it makes you feel special. But probably not for long. Most favors you get from people are booby-trapped. Worse, they may even be like a curse. For enjoying a short moment of favor you can be enslaved by the benefactor all your life.

I’ve met people who seem successful in life due to their well placed connections in high places. But later, you see them unable to freely decide for their lives–sometimes even for their families–because their benefactors dictate everything for them.

Really, it’s better not to be that successful than to lose your freedom to people who help realize such unreal success. Dictated or granted success with strings attached is really sometimes the worst failure. Your imagined success is in the hands of people who often take back more than they have given.

So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands…free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. [Proverbs 6]

The above bible verse is about putting up security for your neighbor or giving pledge for a stranger–being trapped by what you said. It also very well applies to receiving favors from people who tend to enslave you. The suggested remedy? Free yourself as best as you can.

That’s how serious it is.

So the best thing to do is never accept favors from stingy people, or those who tend to rule over subjects.

Don’t eat with people who are stingy; don’t desire their delicacies. They are always thinking about how much it costs. “Eat and drink,” they say, but they don’t mean it. You will throw up what little you’ve eaten, and your compliments will be wasted. [Proverbs 23.6-8]

Remember–if you need anything, ask God. Better to be indebted to God than to be so to men.
